In the past, the only way to reproduce natural-looking high-contrast images was to rely on expert manual adjustment techniques. Using a technique known as dodging in which the exposure time in specific areas of the image is manually adjusted, it was possible to fine-tune contrast to create an image that resembled what was originally perceived.
Dynamic Range Compression Technology achieves the same dodging effect during digital processing, making it possible to achieve optimal image quality instantly, consistently, and automatically.

When printing a scene that contains strong contrasts, often the highlights end up washing out, while the dark areas just become black.

Even in high contrast scenes, details are sharp and clear in both the subject and the background.
