Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. (President: Shigetaka Komori) has been developing the commercialization of a high-speed optical transmission system in cooperation with Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. ever since the successful development of Graded-Index Plastic Optical Fiber (GI-POF) announced in September 2002. Now Fuji Film Group exhibits the Graded-Index Plastic Optical Fiber "LUMISTAR" and High-Speed Optical Transmission Systems that uses the GI-POF at the INTEROPT 2003 (at Makuhari Messe from July 15 to 18, 2003) to introduce the group's technological achievements to the world.

<Exhibition Outline>
1. Exhibition theme
"High-Speed Optical Transmission Systems Proposed by Fuji Film Group"

2. Exhibits
(1) Graded-Index(*1) Plastic Optical Fiber "LUMISTAR"
"LUMISTAR" is capable of high-speed transmission at more than 1 Gbit/s without deterioration in output signal quality due to the optimal graded-index distribution of refractive index within the fiber. The large-diameter of plastic fiber makes it highly resistant to axial deviation. The connection work is very easy, requiring no special tool for fiber-end treatment. With those advantages, "LUMISTAR" can be economically and safely used in ordinary homes Fuji Film Group is going topropose the high-speed optical transmission systems with "LUMISTAR" as the base technology described below.

(*1) Graded Index: Refractive indexes increase toward the center of the fiber core.

(2) Optical Gigabit Ethernet System
The Optical Gigabit Ethernet System is newly developed by incorporating "LUMISTAR".
The system combines the Optical Transmitter-Receiver Module with VCSEL(*2),High-Speed Transmitter(*3), and Receiver(*4) developed by Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., and the Optical Lens Module developed by Fuji Photo Optical Co., Ltd. The system makes it possible to realize economical and long-life (100,000 hours or longer) network construction.
"LUMISTAR" can ease construction of high-speed home networks and office networks.

(*2) VCSEL: Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser
(*3) Transmitter: Converts electric signal to optical signal.
(*4) Receiver: Converts optical signal to electric signal.

(3) Optical DVI (Digital Visual Interface) Link System
The system links large flat panel displays such as plasma television,large-size liquid crystal television, projector, with tuners. It uses the same Optical Transmitter-Receiver Module with VCSEL, High-Speed Transmitter and Receiver developed by Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., and the Optical Lens Module developed by Fuji Photo Optical Co., Ltd., as the system for item (2) above. Conventional electric wires deteriorate the quality of an electric signal along their distance, making it difficult to establish a link of 10m or longer. Now, with "LUMISTAR", an optical link of around 30m is easily achieved by easy workable plastic fiber. The system is suitable for such application fields as event sites, amusement facilities, commercial establishments, security facilities, hotels, service areas, schools, hospitals, airports, broadcasting stations, etc.
