High capacity of maximum 6.25TB (Terabytes)

FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium6 Data Cartridge

First LTO in the world produced with Barium Ferrite Magnetic Particles

November 22, 2012

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) announces the introduction of the "LTO Ultrium 6 Data Cartridge"*, a magnetic tape media certified by the Linear Tape Open (LTO) Technology Provider Companies (TPC). Fujifilm achieved the super high compressed capacity of 6.25TB with a transfer rate up to 400MB/second by applying Fujifilm's original Barium Ferrite magnetic particles to the advanced NANOCUBIC technology**.

The biggest difference of "LTO Ultrium 6 Data Cartridge" (LTO6) from the past generations is that this time Fujifilm selects to use Barium Ferrite magnetic particles instead of using the current metal particles. Barium Ferrite can maintain its magnetic characteristic even when particle size is small; resulting in an LTO6 cartridge with better coercivity and frequency characteristic compared to the past generation cartridges. In addition, Fujifilm LTO6 cartridges with Barium Ferrite have a long archival life (over 30 years) and show good performance when used with older drives that have aged from repeated use.

Since Fujifilm introduced LTO 1 in 2000, we have been leading the industry by continuously working to achieve higher performance and higher quality tapes. In 2010, we made a joint announcement with IBM on a world record of recording density on a linear magnetic tape of 29.5Gbpsi (Gigabit per square inch), which equates to a single cartridge with a recording capacity of 35TB (native). The following year, Fujifilm announced mass production of multi-terabyte enterprise tape cartridges incorporating Barium Ferrite technology, supporting the latest enterprise tape systems from both Oracle (StorageTek T10000C) and IBM (TS1140).

Fujifilm is the first to apply Barium Ferrite particle on the LTO Ultrium cartridge. With these leading technologies, Fujifilm will continue to develop and produce new products that will meet customers' ever changing data storage requirements.

WORM (Write Once Read Many) is a cartridge that can only be written once but can be read many times. This cartridge supports applications which require data to be stored in a non-rewritable format.
ECO (Ecology Pack) is eco-friendly packaging with no plastic-case and index cards.
4. Features
  1. (1)Recording capacity of 6.25TB with transfer rate of 400MB/sec
By using Fujifilm's proprietary NANOCUBIC Technology, we can record 2,176 data tracks on just 12.65mm tape width. This is the key to achieving the amazing recording capacity of 6.25TB (2.5x compression rate, native 2.5TB). In addition, with the combination of linear multi channel recording technology and data compression technology a transfer speed up to 400MB/sec can be realized (2.5x compression rate, native 160MB/sec).
  1. (2)High capacity recording achieved by advanced NANOCUBIC Technology
    • Nano-particle Technology: Approximately 30% smaller than metal particle used on LTO5.
    • Nano-dispersion Technology: Developed uniform particle dispersion technology by applying high-dispersed binder technology.
    • Nano-coating Technology: Improved the ultra thin layer coating technology resulting in an even thinner magnetic layer.
  1. (3)Features of Barium Ferrite magnetic particle
    • Excellent read/write property: By adopting Barium Ferrite, Fujifilm LTO6 tapes have higher coercvity, lower noise compared to older generations. Over time the recording head of a well-used drives start to wear down leading to a drop in performance. However, since Fujifilm's LTO6 with Barium Ferrite, from a system performance point of view, has more margin compared to metal particle tapes (measured using Fuji manufactured tapes), it can be read/written more accurately on these older drives.
    • Long Archival Lifeļ¼š Barium Ferrite is chemically stable (already oxidized) and does not easily get demagnetized by outside energy. Therefore magnetic tape using Barium Ferrite is said to have a longer archival life of more than 30 years based on Fujifilm's acceleration tests.
  1. (4)Eco-friendly design
The Fujifilm Group companies around the world aim for sustainable development by producing product based on the "Fujifilm Group Green Policy". Fujifilm LTO6 cartridge is also eco-friendly designed with no BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants) to minimize the environmental impact during the product life cycle as much as possible.
  1. (5)Encrypting technology
LTO6 hardware incorporates Encryption technology to ensure data security when transferring cartridges between multiple locations.
  1. (6)16kilobyte Cartridge Memory (IC chip)
With more space to record mount history information, users have the ability to monitor their data environment, such as cartridge usage and media health.
