April 14, 2016

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) has announced the launch, in May 2016, of the “FUJINON UA107x8.4” (hereinafter “UA107x8.4”) a 4K-compatible broadcast zoom lens, achieving the world's highest* zoom of 107x, as part of the “4K Premier” Series***. The “UA107x8.4” covers a range from a best-in-class wide-angle of 8.4mm** to a super-telephoto range of 900mm, supporting 4K shooting needs for a variety of applications.

The market needs for 4K footage are rapidly expanding, as seen through the worldwide shipment of 31.6 million units*4 of 4K televisions, a year-on-year increase of approximately 2.7x in 2015. These needs are expected to further increase in the future. Currently, the requirements for 4K-compatible high-magnification zoom lenses are increasing, with the desire to shoot images with dynamic 4K resolution. With sports broadcasting, for example, powerful shots of players, expressive facial features and fine gestures seen during golf, or decisive plays images from far away from the camera and expressions of coaches on the bench seen during soccer. In addition, needs for a single, easily-operable 4K lens that can capture images ranging from panoramic views of the venue to expressions of artists on stage during concerts and live performances are also arising.

The “UA107x8.4” is a 4K-compatible broadcast zoom lens that achieves the world's highest zoom of 107x. Covering a wide range of focal lengths, from a best-in-class wide angle of 8.4mm to a super-telephoto range of 900mm, images can be shot at 4K resolution in a variety of applications, such as from sports broadcasting to concerts and live performances. The floating focus system, which controls multiple lens groups according to the shooting distance, achieves high-resolution footage across the entire zoom range. High-resolution and dynamic productions are made possible. In addition, thanks to Fujifilm's proprietary “optical stabilization mechanism,” image blur due to platform shaking is corrected, allowing a stable image to be shot.

FUJINON lenses by Fujifilm are known for advanced descriptive performance, contributing to the evolution of imaging through their use in the production of TV programs, movies and commercials across the world. Fujifilm will continue to tap into its optical, high precision forming and assembling technologies that have been nurtured over many years to develop and supply innovative products that address the diversifying needs of broadcast production.

This product will be showcased at “NAB 2016”, a trade show of broadcasting equipment to be held in Las Vegas from April 18 to 21, 2016.

1. Model name: Broadcast zoom lens “FUJINON UA107x8.4 BE”

2. Release date: May, 2016

3. Main features:

(1) Achieving the world's highest zoom ratio of 107x. Achieving both high magnification up to a super-telephoto range of 900mm and 4K-compatible high optical performance

  • Allows for dynamic 4K productions such as sports broadcasting.
  • Covers a wide range of focal lengths, from a best-in-class wide angle of 8.4mm to a super-telephoto range of 900mm. Exhibits high operability when shooting images in 4K resolution in a variety of applications, such as concerts and live performance broadcasting.
  • The floating focus system, which controls multiple lens groups according to the shooting distance, minimizes performance variations caused by the change of shooting distance to deliver high resolution from close-up to infinity.
  • Fujifilm’s proprietary multi-layer coating processing, known as “High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating (HT-EBC)”, is applied for enhanced transmittance and color reproduction.

(2) Achieving natural bokeh with the adoption of nine aperture blades

  • An aperture shape close to that of a circle is achieved with the adoption of nine aperture blades, allowing for footage expressions making use of a more natural bokeh.

(3) Equipped with popular image-stabilization mechanism

  • Equipped with Fujifilm's proprietary “optical stabilization mechanism,” popular with high magnification zoom lenses. Image blur due to platform shaking is corrected, achieving a stable image.

(4) Equipped with 16 bit encoders*5

  • The lens is equipped with the 16-bit encoders, capable of making high-resolution output of lens data including zoom and focal position information. It can be linked with various other systems such as a virtual studio system for combining CG images with live action footage.
  • *5 The sensor for converting position information into digital signals; Zoom and focus position data is divided in 16-bit resolution and output as electric signals.
