Understanding Autofocus
Even today's high-tech cameras need a little care with focus, or you'll end up with blurred, fuzzy shots. Remember that most auto-focus cameras focus at a point at the center of the viewfinder frame.

Avoiding misfocus
If your subject is to the side of the frame, simply pressing the shutter will focus on the background rather than the subject. To avoid this, use focus lock as explained below.

Using Focus Lock
First aim your camera so that your subject is in the center of the viewfinder frame. Now press the shutter button halfway down. This locks focus on your subject (usually indicated by a light in the viewfinder). Now, while keeping the button halfway pressed, recompose the scene as you like. Then press the shutter the rest of the way. Your subject will be in perfect focus, no matter where it is in the frame.

Shutter Time Lag
The amount of time between when you press the shutter and the moment the image is recorded to the memory card is called shutter lag. This slightly delayed response may cause you to miss the instant you were shooting for. This lag is more noticeable during the auto focus process. To minimize shutter lag, pre-set and lock the focus, keeping the shutter button depressed halfway while you wait for your shot.
