At Fujifilm we consider biodiversity to be an important CSR issue. We are developing an action plan incorporating views from within and outside the Fujifilm group. In developing our action plan we are heeding the opinions of stakeholders and responding to the needs of society.
Conserving biodiversity is a priority issue in the Fujifilm group's medium-term CSR plan. We have designated it as a focus for stakeholder dialogues since 2005. We recognize the deep interconnections between biodiversity and our own business operations, since we draw upon so many natural resources in our products and services.
To evaluate awareness of biodiversity conservation issues, we sent a questionnaire to 25 enterprises, including Fujifilm group companies, with 22 responding. About half the respondents recognized the term "biodiversity." About 90% said they had no knowledge of the ecosystems in their own area. Most understood that there was a connection between biodiversity and business activities in the purchase of raw materials. Reported activities in the biodiversity conservation area were limited to in-house volunteer efforts and did not involve outside organizations that directly address biodiversity issues.
We have conducting a series of ongoing dialogues with experts and young people on the subject of biodiversity conservation. Biodiversity conservation is an issue that reaches across generations, so cooperation between adults and future generations is vital. We are encouraging dialogue with young people to seek cooperation in which all generations stand on an equal footing.
It is important to recognize the meaning and significance of biodiversity conservation. We will promote in-house education about biodiversity conservation and clearly present our stance and policy to move this dialogue toward concrete action.
