Fujifilm, Tokyo Gas and TGES Agree to Supply City Gas Linked to Biomethane Produced Overseas

TOKYO, June 25, 2026 - FUJIFILM Corporation, Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corporation have reached an agreement for the supply of city gas linked to biomethane produced overseas^*1 to Fujifilm’s Ashigara Site at the Kanagawa Factory. This agreement marks the first^*2 initiative in Japan’s chemical industry to use such city gas at a manufacturing site.

This agreement is a preliminary initiative on a pilot basis to verify the future potential of using such city gas supplied under an arrangement linked to biomethane produced overseas, while assessing regulatory treatment, supply stability, costs and other factors. The city gas supplied under this agreement will be used in part of the Ashigara Site. The three companies will continue working together on initiatives related to the decarbonization of energy use at manufacturing sites.

Biomethane is produced by capturing and reusing organic methane^*3 released into the atmosphere. When used as an alternative to fossil fuels, biomethane is expected to be one option for addressing greenhouse gas emissions associated with fuel use. Since its main component is methane, the same as city gas, biomethane can be used through existing LNG and city gas infrastructure. In Japan, discussions are currently underway at government councils and other bodies regarding the requirements for the treatment of biomethane produced overseas under the SHK System^*4. In addition, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)^*5 is revising standards related to companies’ net-zero targets, and the treatment of bioenergy under international standards such as the GHG Protocol is also being discussed. 

FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation has set a goal of reducing CO₂ emissions associated with energy used in its own operations to net zero by 2040, and the Fujifilm Group is advancing initiatives toward decarbonization within its operations.

In manufacturing processes, not only electricity but also thermal energy is required. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is important to combine various measures, including energy conservation, the introduction of renewable electricity and a shift to lower-carbon fuels.

The use of city gas supplied under an arrangement linked to biomethane produced overseas is a preliminary initiative to explore options for decarbonizing fuel use in manufacturing processes, particularly at manufacturing sites in the chemical industry. Through continued collaboration with the Tokyo Gas Group, we will steadily advance initiatives related to the decarbonization of fuel use in manufacturing processes.

Tokyo Gas and TGES provide solutions in the areas of decarbonization, optimization and resilience under the solution business brand “IGNITURE”^*6, extending beyond the energy field. In the Tokyo Gas Group’s FY2026–FY2028 Medium-Term Management Plan, the Group is promoting the introduction and expanded use of e-methane, biomethane and other solutions as part of its initiatives toward energy decarbonization.

Tokyo Gas and TGES have built a long-standing partnership with Fujifilm, including the provision of onsite energy services for the Ashigara Site, such as the supply of utilities including electricity, water, air and other services, including on-site power generation. We are very pleased to have reached this agreement to supply city gas under an arrangement linked to biomethane produced overseas to Fujifilm as part of initiatives related to energy decarbonization. We will continue working together on initiatives related to energy decarbonization at the Fujifilm Group’s manufacturing sites.
