TOKYO, July 23, 2026 — FUJIFILM Business Innovation Corporation has established a horizontal closed-loop recycling*1 scheme with Teijin Limited for plastic exterior parts used in multifunction printers in Japan. Recycled plastic material recovered from exterior parts of multifunction printers collected from the market after use will be reused in exterior parts including front covers of multifunction printers, which require a high level of appearance quality.
Exterior parts made with this recycled plastic material will be adopted for the ApeosPort-VII C R Series and ApeosPort C R Series of the remanufactured machines.*2
In recent years, amid unstable resource supplies and rising raw material costs, the effective use of limited resources has become increasingly important. Growing attention is being paid to the circular use of product materials, including plastics. For companies, advancing resource circulation initiatives has become an important challenge in order to reduce the consumption of exhaustible resource, and minimize waste generation.
In 1995, FUJIFILM Business Innovation established the Closed-Loop System, a resource circulation framework covering the entire product lifecycle from product planning, development and manufacturing through to disposal. For used multifunction printers collected from the market, the company has regenerated components through cleaning and blast processing, which uses granular abrasives to remove dirt, and has reused those components, including exterior parts, under its quality assurance standards. However, for exterior parts requiring a high level of appearancequality, conventional reuse methods have not always been able to meet the required standards, depending on the extent of breakage, scratches, or other damage. As a result, such parts have typically been replaced with new ones. The closed-loop recycled material introduced through this initiative provides a new option for expanding resource circulation to parts that were difficult to reuse using conventional methods.
To sustain closed-loop recycling, it is essential to balance the volume of materials collected with the volume required for production. By leveraging its own multifunction printer collection network and its remanufacturing system, FUJIFILM Business Innovation has established a horizontal closed-loop recycling scheme in which exterior parts recovered from used multifunction printers are recycled into exterior parts for remanufactured machines. This enables exterior parts recovered from used multifunction printers to be recycled back into the same application while maintaining the required quality, rather than being downcycled for lower-value uses, thereby helping preserve the material value of exterior parts within the same application.
In this initiative, to ensure stable supply of recycled material that meets the quality requirements for exterior parts, metals and other types of plastics are removed from exterior parts of used multifunction printers collected from the market, and only the target plastic materials are recovered through disassembly and sorting. A wet grinding process, in which materials are grinded while being washed, is also employed to help reduce contamination from foreign substances during the grinding process.
In addition, FUJIFILM Business Innovation has collaborated with Teijin, which has expertise in designing materials for recyclability, and has adopted materials for exterior parts that are better able to maintain their quality after long-term use and subsequent recycling. As a result, the recycled material—containing 80% recycled content derived from plastics sorted through FUJIFILM Business Innovation’s collection network—has been designed to meet the physical properties and color tone requirements for exterior parts. Using Teijin’s compounding technology*3 to restore material properties and adjust colors, the recycled material achieves performance and appearance comparable to those of virgin material.
Under its Recycling Policy, “Promoting Resource Circulation Toward Zero Waste,” FUJIFILM Business Innovation has been advancing resource-circulation initiatives. In May 2024, the company set a target of reducing the input ratio of newly extracted resources for its applicable products to 60% or less by the fiscal year ending March 2031,*4 with the aim of further reducing the input of exhaustible resources. The company promotes the reuse of used multifunction printers, toner cartridges, spare parts, and other components, as well as the use of recycled materials such as recycled plastic and recycled iron. Going forward, FUJIFILM Business Innovation will continue to expand and strengthen resource-circulation initiatives, including the broader adoption of reused parts, to help advance a more circular use of resources.
- *1 Horizontal closed-loop recycling refers to a resource circulation system in which materials derived from used products are reused in equivalent parts, while maintaining quality, rather than being diverted to different applications, within a controlled collection and recycling scheme.
