Fuji Xerox Steps Up to Lead in Ethical Paper Sourcing at Forest Stewardship Council Vancouver Declaration

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Asia Pacific Business Forum was organized at the Sheraton Hotel in Hanoi from November 7th to 8th, with the participation of the Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd.

The Forum was held to highlight existing and future market demand for FSC certification and the challenges and opportunities in the pulp, paper, and packaging sector.

Mr. Sam Allen - Regional Paper Business Manager - declares Fuji Xerox Co. Ltd ’s commitment at the FSC Forum

Fuji Xerox announced at the Forum its decision to strengthen its ethical sourcing commitment by pledging support for the Vancouver Declaration, in partnership with the FSC, to further reiterate its commitment to sustainability in the region. The Vancouver Declaration was launched on October 11, 2017 at the 8th FSC General Assembly held in Vancouver, Canada, as part of the FSC’s wider ambition to help businesses meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

As a company positioned in the middle of the paper-use supply chain, Fuji Xerox has corporate social responsibility (CSR) and an influence over its suppliers and customers in paper use. Since 2004, it has established a paper procurement standard that sets key requirements for suppliers, including the traceability of raw materials and the environmental management of manufacturing plants. The requirements were raised in 2012 to a comprehensive suppliers’ assessment against three key CSR aspects, such as environmental conservation, the rights of local residents, and corporate ethics, including human rights. Suppliers will be suspended if problems are found from the perspective of social or environmental sustainability.

At present, all of Fuji Xerox’s 15 operating offices in Japan and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region, such as Australia, Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam uphold its paper procurement policy and adhere to FSC guidelines, among other international standards that ensure that the forests around the world are responsibly managed. With the decline in precious forest resources and rising climate challenges, Fuji Xerox aims to work towards more sustainable sourcing of products derived from forests, by increasing the use of its materials from responsibly-managed forests in the region and its emerging markets.

“The FSC is delighted to have Fuji Xerox joining the Vancouver Declaration,” said Mr. Adam Beaumont, Regional Director of FSC Asia Pacific. “Doing so shows that Fuji Xerox acknowledges the FSC as the most credible and widely acceptable supplier of choice. We’re looking forward to seeing Fuji Xerox increase their share of FSC-certified source materials.”

The FSC now covers more than 15 per cent of global industrial wood production.

“We’ve sold FSC paper in our business for more than two decades,” said Ms. Janet Neo, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. “The Vancouver Declaration is a natural step up in our ethical sourcing commitment. Joining this declaration is testament to our constant pursuit to maintain and improve our status as a green company, and aligns the company closer to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals that were established to ‘transform’ the world.”

Fuji Xerox plans to build on this momentum to further streamline its business operations in the region to support the company’s global sustainability commitment of reducing the regional carbon footprint across the value chain by 30 per cent by 2020 and to be a thought leader for customers, partners, and vendors on some of the most impactful sustainability issues.
