Introduction

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous group of diseases with multiple etiologies characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from inadequate insulin secretion, inadequate insulin action or both. Persistent hyperglycemia can induce various systemic complications, and it can also cause a severe status such as diabetic ketoacidosis or hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state.
