Insta Medlab MRI Centre

CLIENT

Insta Medlab MRI Centre was opened in Hong Kong in early 2022 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the only Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) center in Tuen Mun, it provides a full range of diagnostic services, including MRI and ultrasound examinations and laboratory tests, with the aim to serve the local community and ease the burden on public hospitals.

“In the past, patients in northwestern New Territories had to travel for hours to access diagnostic and imaging services in central business districts, and wait weeks to get their results. We are committed to addressing this pain point not only by establishing the first-ever MRI center in Tuen Mun, but also by utilizing digital solutions to accelerate the entire patient journey,” said Marco Pang, Director of Insta Medlab MRI Centre.

CHALLENGE

As a newcomer to the market, Insta Medlab had to convince public hospitals to issue referral letters and gain trusts form patients in Tuen Mun district, one of the densely populated districts with 7% of the whole Hong Kong population.

“Patients face a maximum wait of around 4 years for a medical imaging service at Tuen Mun Hospital, the only public hospital in the district. The overloaded healthcare system needs to be tackled immediately,” said Carmen Leung, General Manager of Insta Medlab MRI Centre.

The need to preserve massive amounts of medical reports proved to be another major challenge. Medical imaging centers today commonly still face high costs in storing chemical-based films in external warehouses and transporting them to physicians by courier. These manual practices incur high labor costs and are not sustainable from an environmental point of view.

Insta Medlab knew that HealthTech played an important role in helping them provide a high-quality patient experience. Yet, sourcing IT infrastructure and equipment is very time-consuming. “We need a trusted business partner with the capabilities and expertise to offer one-stop solutions and advice,” said Carmen.

SOLUTION

Insta Medlab turned to FUJIFILM Business Innovation Hong Kong (FUJIFILM BI HK).

“FUJIFILM BI HK is the best among all service providers. They offer comprehensive healthcare solutions matching our clinical requirements at a reasonable price,” said Marco.

As an expert in IT and business solutions with proven track record of success, FUJIFILM BI HK backed up Insta Medlab since the beginning of construction. They provided counsel on setting up the entire IT network and infrastructure like server room, security and access control system.

In addition, FUJIFILM BI HK centralized clinical information and patient care services via Clinical Management System (CMS). Tailor-made for clinics and hospitals, the system facilitates the end-to-end healthcare workflows, from appointment scheduling and billing to pharmacy notes and consultation reporting. More importantly, CMS can be fully integrated with the Hospital Authority’s Electronic Health Record Sharing System (eHealth).

Insta Medlab also deployed FUJIFILM BI HK’s Medical Report Output System (MROS) to produce personalized medical reports in USBs or booklets. MROS also provides a smart and economical way for the patients and their medical team to share Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images and doctors’ reports.

RESULT

With FUJIFILM BI HK’s dedicated support throughout the development of the new MRI center, Insta Medlab quickly gained a firm foothold in the market amid pandemic challenges and has become a reliable medical imaging service provider for residents in Tuen Mun and beyond.

The whole medical team can locate patient records at speed through CMS, which automatically synchronizes records between front and back offices. This results in a more accurate and efficient clinical management, substantially improving the patient experience. The connection with eHealth also enables healthcare practitioners and patients to access medical records seamlessly.

At the same time, MROS has eliminated the chemical-based file usage, which greatly reduces operational costs, manual processes, and its environmental footprint. Patients also no longer need to bring their bulky medical films and reports to follow up with doctors.

“FUJIFILM BI HK has played a crucial role in our early success. Looking ahead, the reopening of borders with China will likely bring more patients from the Greater Bay Area. We are also keen to explore opportunities to expand to more underserved districts in Hong Kong and bring best-in-class MRI services to a wider group of patients. In this, we will very much be supported by FUJIFILM BI HK to continue to provide us with a wide range of business and IT solutions,” said Marco.

Digital transformation has become a cornerstone for businesses in every industry to achieve success, and the healthcare sector is no exception.

“HealthTech is undoubtedly the key to help healthcare practitioners optimize clinical procedures and bring a better experience to patients. For example, COVID-19 spurred the expansion of telemedicine around the world, allowing doctors to see more patients. It not only cuts waiting times and increases satisfaction levels, but also saves operational costs and is more sustainable. And now, we are sending MRI reports to patients and public hospitals via WhatsApp or emails.” said Dr. Hubert Wong, Medical Adviser of Insta Medlab MRI Centre.

Dr. Wong added with the successful case with FUJIFILM BI HK, he hopes to showcase the positive impacts of digital transformation to the healthcare industry.
