AI is now embedded inside many of the services and devices we use every day. These devices may not be carrying out crazy calculations involving vast amounts of data, but they do make working life run a little bit smoother.
Intelligent by design
One example of this embedded intelligence is FUJIFILM Business Innovation’s ApeosPort-VII multifunction printer. The device has been designed from the ground up with intelligence built in.
Smart WelcomEyes are sensors which detect when a user approaches the machine and ‘wakes up’ so it is ready to work immediately. This provides a big improvement in energy efficiency by increasing the time the machine can spend in sleep mode.
The simple intuitive touchscreen interface looks and works just like a smartphone screen. The user taps the relevant icon to get instant access to its functions or swipes to move onto the next screen. The device uses hidden intelligence to link automatically to cloud services and security systems.
Intelligence under the hood
But the really clever aspects are how the printer maintains itself. As every business owner knows, the expense of buying a printer is not the upfront cost. It is the expense of consumables, time lost waiting for those consumables to be delivered, and the time lost waiting for an engineer to visit and get the machine working again.
The TQMS Predictive Maintenance Support program collects device log information from individual machines, along with consumable levels. This can be shared with the customer to provide a monthly environmental report and comparisons between different departments’ usage.
More importantly it can pre-emptively order and dispatch consumables as required. It can arrange engineer visits, service parts and other consumables as well as scheduling online firmware updates. All without intervention or support from the customer.
This works as a partnership between FUJIFILM Business Innovation and the customer to sense, predict and act to ensure maximum uptime for devices and improve overall efficiency in the office.
The customer gets a single management interface for all machines in the organisation and all meter data. By sharing some of this data with FUJIFILM Business Innovation, the customer gets just-in-time inventory supplies of consumables. Predictive maintenance and automated alerts provide better operating margins, improved efficiency and reduced downtime for individual machines.
Intelligent support for the user
ApeosPort-VII also offers intelligent help for the user. It can be configured to automatically select nearest paper size when scanning or copying irregularly sized documents like receipts. It can be pre-set to automatically choose a file format, file name and storage destination when documents are scanned. There is even an option to use OCR to make it much easier to search for documents once scanned.
If the authentication feature is being used, the device can even send scanned documents directly to your email address.
