FUJIFILM Dimatix has amassed extensive intellectual property on jet design that enables a wide range of performance attributes involving both large drop printheads and high-speed small drop printheads. Its jet design technologies include proprietary modeling techniques that match printhead performance requirements with jet design attributes.
With REDIJET® ink recirculation, ink is always moving throughout the printhead. That means printheads are always ready to print. Get improved startup and restart time and optimize image quality.
In its SAMBA® and SKYFIRE® printheads, FUJIFILM Dimatix combines a thin film piezo technology called sputtered PZT with Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) processing. This combination uniquely opens design space for high resolution and high frequency jetting. In sputtered PZT, the piezo crystals are aligned, in essence, automatically as the PZT is deposited (aka "poled as deposited") and this results in a number of long-life and performance benefits.
Our silicon nozzle plate is made from a monolithic silicon structure, instead of sheets glued together. This leads to:
- A silicon structure that does not age
- Compact jet configurations for high resolutions
- Consistent and lower maintenance
The forces resulting from jet actuation, even when carefully controlled, can be detrimental to printing performance. For example, when each jet fires, it expels fluid from the printhead, which must be refilled for future jetting. The forces that drive the refilling process generate low frequency energy that is trapped inside the printhead. If this energy is left unchecked, it would disrupt jetting consistency. FUJIFILM Dimatix’s energy dissipation technology absorbs and reduces this low frequency energy.
FUJIFILM Dimatix printheads include several types of protective coating to increase performance and product life.
The MEMS-based printheads utilize non-wetting coating formulations on the surface of the silicon nozzle plate.This coating works to ensure consistent jetting performance with targeted fluids. It is compatible with routine maintenance procedures.
Internal protective coatings add to long printhead life by defending the inner workings from aggressive fluids.
Hydrophobic coatings are used on the edges of printheads to ensure protection against jetted fluid buildup around the printhead.
VersaDrop allows multiple drop sizes in binary mode and greyscale capability from one printhead, with no loss to productivity. Each jet is individually addressable.
By varying the size of the drop fired, rather than the number of drops fired or the number of passes by the printhead to create each pixel, VersaDrop technology makes it possible for inkjet systems to satisfy a wide range of commercial print requirements, including applications demanding smooth tonal gradations and extremely fine features printed within the same job.
VersaDrop technology allows different drop sizes to arrive at the substrate simultaneously, which contributes to high image quality.
FUJIFILM Dimatix SAMBA® printheads are built for single-pass printing. The parallelogram shape provides compact in-line stitching for any length of printbar.

The bulk piezoelectric printheads produced by FUJIFILM Dimatix feature designs that enable major parts to be repaired or replaced. The durable construction provides a long life, but when needed, the parts called out in this diagram can be removed and replaced. This includes the replaceable metal nozzle plate assembly.
