Initiatives for Occupational Health and Safety

With the concept of “Occupational health and safety is the basis of all business activities,” FUJIFILM Holdings gives the highest priority to the health and safety of its employees and is fully compliant with the related laws and regulations.
In 2020, FUJIFILM Holdings enacted, at its sites all over the world, new Occupational Health and Safety Regulations that meet the requirements of ISO 45001:2018, an international occupational health and safety standard. The operation of the said regulations help clarify the safety management structure and safety promotion activity goals throughout the group to further reinforce our governance of occupational health and safety.

Occupational Health and Safety Activities at Fujifilm
Health and safety training programs

In order to raise the safety knowledge and awareness of all employees, we are expanding our e-learning content so that employees can study individually in their free time.
In addition to the health and safety-related education programs that provide education when joining the company and being assigned to a department, as well as safety guidance after three months and education by rank and position. We also hold special seminars that are tailored to the work in charge and themes.

Prevention of Occupational Accidents at the Production Sites
Hazard prediction training

In order to prevent workplace accidents among employees, we provide new employees with hazard prediction training. By learning in advance about the points of danger in the work they will be doing and the equipment they will be using, and taking safety measures, we can prevent accidents before they happen.
This kind of training is also provided after joining the company, through on-the-job training at each workplace and regular “safety meetings” held at each workplace, to raise employees’ safety awareness.

Hazard simulation training

As a measure to improve employees’ safety awareness, we hold “Hazard Simulation Training” sessions where employees can experience simulated accidents such as being caught in, caught in between, or electrocuted. We also hold these sessions for employees of group companies, and are working to improve safety awareness throughout the group.
In addition, as factories and research facilities often use hazardous materials as defined by the Fire Service Act, we also hold “Explosion-Proof Simulation Training” sessions where employees can experience simulated fires and explosions.

Activities to Prevent Accidents and Disasters Caused by Chemical Substances

Chemical products such as photographic developing agents and semiconductor resist processing solutions contain many chemical substances, and when providing these products to customers, Fujifilm provides Safety Data Sheets (SDS). These are a means of providing information to prevent accidents involving chemical products and ensure the safety of people, including customers, and the ecosystem.
In order to ensure thorough management of occupational safety and environmental conservation for both customers and employees, Fujifilm has created its own SDS (called FMSDS) for the chemical substances it uses in-house. In addition to safety, applicable laws and handling method information obtained from SDSs issued by our business partners, we also add the latest regulatory information from our own database. Based on the FMSDS created as shown in the above diagram, we conduct risk assessments for all chemical substances used. We also thoroughly manage occupational safety and environmental conservation, and ensure compliance with related laws and regulations.

Motivating employees for safety through the internal award programs

The Fujifilm Group recognizes employees for their outstanding safety activities through the following safety award system.

  • Annual Award: Organizations that have achieved zero lost-time injuries and have a rate of non-lost-time injuries below the company standard
  • Special Award: Organizations that have engaged in excellent safety activities that serve as a model for the group in terms of employee participation rate, results, and ingenuity

Through these award programs, we are working to motivate our employees to engage in safety activities and to continue to strive for safety.
Please also see the “TOPICS” below for information on the activities of the group companies that have received internal awards.

Initiatives for mental health and working long hours

Every November, the Fujifilm Group conducts stress checks for all employees in Japan. The results are analyzed by each Group company in Japan, and for workplaces with a high health risk, the occupational physician and the human resources department work together to hold workplace meetings, analyze the causes, and plan improvement measures, and work to improve the workplace environment.

We also provide line care training for all executives and managers in Japan, and regularly hold lectures on the significance of mental health measures in the workplace and the mental health measures required of managers, given by a mental health supervisor (occupational physician). We are also promoting preventative measures by providing education to all newly appointed executives using a common mental health management guide. From fiscal 2022, we have established a mental health consultation service (telephone, web, and in-person) and built a 24-hour support system.

Furthermore, in order to prevent health problems caused by long working hours, if overtime exceeds 80 hours in a single month or 45 hours on average over a quarter, we carry out health check questionnaires, interviews with superiors, and interviews with occupational physicians to ensure health and take into account work-related issues.
In addition, we are strengthening our systems for appropriate health management and attendance management using IT, such as automatically sending out alarm emails to employees who are approaching the maximum working hours or who have not registered their attendance.

Natural disaster response

The Fujifilm Group believes that it is our social responsibility to continue supplying products and services (business continuity) while ensuring the safety and security of its employees in each region. We are actively working to prevent and mitigate disasters in order to minimize business damage in the event of a disaster.
Prompt information gathering is essential for minimizing damage from disasters, so the Fujifilm Group as a whole has established an organizational structure that places an emphasis on information gathering.

Disaster Information-Collection Organization

Furthermore, our company is narrowing down and predicting the disaster risks that could occur at each of our bases in Japan and overseas. We are not only implementing company-wide measures, but also promoting individual measures that respond to the disaster risks specific to each base and each business. Internal Award Programs

In July 2024, Fujifilm Group held an awards ceremony for the FY2023 Occupational Health and Safety Awards. Thirteen organizations were awarded, and FUJIFILM Cellular Dynamics, Inc. in the United States received a special award for its outstanding activities from the perspective of employee participation in health and safety activities, achievements, and creative ingenuity.

They used a safety mascot character that they had created themselves to promote safety activities, with the aim of raising awareness of its activities among employees and fostering a sense of solidarity. As a result, the number of near-miss reports increased, and the occupational accident rate also improved. Furthermore, this initiative was also presented at a safety convention hosted by The American Biological Safety Association (ABSA), and it received high praise from outside the company.

Fujifilm Fujinomiya Factory Receives “Safety Excellence Award”

Fujifilm’s Fujinomiya Factory, which is engaged in the research and development and manufacture of medical X-ray film and various functional films, received the Safety Excellence Award in the Japan Chemical Industry Association’s “JCIA Safety Awards” in May 2022.

At the Fujinomiya Factory, we are promoting “deep-rooted risk assessment” that identifies potential sources of danger and takes countermeasures in advance by incorporating the “might be” perspective. Deep-Rooted Risk Assessment is a method of risk assessment that is more than three times as effective as conventional methods. It involves a comprehensive approach to identifying potential risks by combining “concerned occupational accidents” that may occur at the workplace with “matters to be noted” such as the physique and strength of employees present at the time, their actions and the situation at the time.

In addition, the factory has been recognized for its efforts to create a safe working environment through the establishment of “Hazard Sensitivity Training Classes” to improve workers’ hazard prediction skills. We also promote “Safety Power-Up Activities,” which are workplace-wide activities that encourage each employee to improve their safety awareness and actively engage in safety activities in their respective workplaces.
